What if something as big as the U.S. Constitution could start with something as simple as building and playing?
Cub Club Builders: Build the Constitution turns some of the Constitution’s biggest ideas into hands-on activities designed especially for young learners.
Children meet some of the Framers, build “We the People,” discover the seven Articles, and explore how amendments can change or add to the Constitution—all while matching, sorting, building, creating, and playing.
No Constitution memorization required. Just build, play, and discover. Build your way through the U.S. Constitution.
Build Your Way Through the Constitution
This Beginning Builder collection includes four hands-on activities:
Meet Some of the Framers
Match face shapes to George Washington, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton while meeting three of the Framers who helped shape the Constitution.
Build “We the People”
Use shapes and reusable pieces to complete the people on the mat while discovering the Constitution’s famous opening words: “We the People.”
Dress the Framers
Dress the Framers with seven Article shirts while discovering that the Constitution is organized into seven Articles, each with an important job. Start with simple color matching, then level up to finding Articles and their big ideas as your child is ready.
Explore the Amendments
Bring back pieces from earlier activities to explore how the Constitution can be changed or added to through amendments. Add stars to the flag, find James Madison, and use the Article V shirt to make an abstract idea something your child can see and touch.
More Than a Matching Activity
Each Builder begins with a short historical connection and then lets your child physically interact with what they're learning about.
Instead of expecting young children to memorize seven Articles or understand the Constitution in its full complexity, Build the Constitution gives them a first connection to ideas they'll encounter again as they grow.
They meet people. They match and build. They hear words like Framers, Articles, “We the People,” and amendments. And little by little, something that can feel very abstract begins to have meaning.
Learning Behind the Building
Your child will practice:
- Shape and color recognition
- Matching and sorting
- Spatial reasoning
- Problem solving
- Fine motor skills
- Following directions
- Listening and recall
- Early civics and history concepts
- Making connections between ideas
And because pieces from earlier activities return in later ones, children have opportunities to recognize, reuse, and connect what they've already discovered.
Grow With Your Child
The activities are designed to meet young learners where they are.
The Dress the Framers activity, for example, includes four levels of play. A younger child can simply find a color and match the correct shirt. As they're ready, they can begin finding Articles by number, listening for the big idea behind each Article, and eventually choosing an Article themselves and telling you what they remember.
There is no need to complete every level or memorize all seven Articles. The goal is the introduction, not mastery.
Build It Again—with Play-Doh!
For even more reuse, laminate the activity mats and pieces before cutting.
Many of the pages can then become Play-Doh mats. Children can create faces, hair, clothing, shapes, and other missing pieces with Play-Doh instead of—or alongside—the included pieces.
There is no need for every finished picture to look the same. Let your child build, experiment, and create while you bring the history behind the play.
