How to Make Reusable Paper Hats for Homeschool History Lessons

Why We Make Reusable History Dress Up Hats

When we study early American history, my kids do not just read about the Founding Fathers or colonial life.

They become them.

Paper hats turn a lesson into an experience.

But if you have ever made paper crafts with young kids, you know they do not last long.

That is why we started making our paper hats reusable and easy to store.

We use these hats throughout Journey Through Early American History when we explore:

• The Founding Fathers
• Colonial life
• The 13 Colonies
• Early American government

It turns history from something they hear into something they wear.

Supplies Needed

  • Paper Hats
  • Laminator
  • Scissors
  • Velcro Stickers

Step 1:

  1. Print the hats.
  2. Laminate the paper.
  3. Cut the hats and stripes out.

Step 2:

Attach two Velcro circles where the instructions indicate using tape or glue.

Make sure to use the rough side of the Velcro on one piece and the soft side on the other.

Step 3:

  1. Measure the hat around your head
  2. Make a note of where it fits.
  3. Place Velcro stickers in that spot.

Step 4:

Attach the two stripes together, and it’s ready to wear!

We store ours in a craft box from the Dollar Tree.

When kids dress the part, they remember the lesson.
